KAREN SANDLER, BOARD CERTIFIED FAMILY DOCTOR

Board Certified Family Doctor, in LeTip since 1998.  Today she spoke about diabetes, a very, very common problem.  The definition is a fasting glucose level greater than or equal to 126.  Symptoms of diabetes plus random glucose greater than 200.  Test everyone greater than 45, or younger than 45 with BMI greater than or equal to 25.
If you are diabetic, you need many, frequent blood tests to check your blood pressure, kidneys, annual eye exam, check the bottoms of feet every night for cuts, cholesterol, thyroid, etc.  Poor diet is a contributing factor, in addition to genetic, inactivity and obesity.  Symptoms include blurred vision, weight loss, excessive thirst, fatigue, weakness, frequent superficial infections and poor wound healing.
Treatment includes a healthy diet (use a certified nutritionist), exercise, evaluate other causes and correct.  Type 1 DM is treated with insulin.  Type 2 DM is treated with oral medications, insulin plus orals, or other subcutaneous injections..  Some of the newer drugs do not cause weight gain as did the earlier medications.  See your doctor if you have been using Avandia.  Get tested, exercise and avoid sugary foods and fast foods.
Karen is a generalist who educates, diagnoses and treats many health problems.  She is also an HIV specialist.  A good tip is anybody not feeling well, or feeling well and wants to continue feeling well or anybody needing a 2nd opinion.  Also anybody needing a vaccine.http://tinyurl.com/276md2d
