Eve Mazzara, GetArt Graphics, Graphic Design

Eve Mazzara, GetArt Graphics, Graphic Design.  Eve spoke to us about communication and a little history on Graphic Arts.  To design is to communicate clearly, by whatever means is necessary.  “ I love NY,” by Milton Glaser was a very successful advertising campaign.   Design is a way of organizing.  It is not a thing, but rather a process and a way of thinking.
Eve gave us a bit of a history lesson from the caves of Lascaux, France to the 1870’s-90’s in the Moulin Rouge, to CocaCola’s 1893 trademark.
Some other very successful and famous campaigns were The first SciFi movie poster, from Metrololis in 1926 and 1940’s, “We can do it” a war poster. By J. Howard Miller  which was a classic rendition of Rosie the Riveter.
In the 1950’s the CBS and the IBM logos became famous and both have longevity.  In 1971 it was  “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.”  The 1990’s brought us the convergence of technology and the visual arts redefinition of Graphic Arts.
You need to communicate with your clients and prospective clients.  How are they going to remember you and think of your company?  Your marketing materials must represent your personality and convey a consistent and professional look.

Bil Manderscheid, State Farm Insurance

Bill Manderscheid, State Farm Insurance, (Like a good neighbor, Manderscheid is there) told us that he has been in the group for almost 11 years and has done business with many of us.  Though Bill does not sing professionally, he does offer personal lines of insurance from horses to houses, umbrella policies, earthquake, home, auto, boat & horse insurance.  He insures “hobbies” such as the customer who has 1 million dollar train set collection.  Although Bill spoke extemporaneously, he claimed that he was prepared.
When you lease a car, you are putting down minimal money and hence you do not have much equity in the car.  When you drive that car off of the lot, it depreciates.  Do you have Gap Coverage?  The insurance company will only pay the actual cash value of the vehicle, not the amount owed.  For a small amount, you can buy insurance to cover this difference.

Sigmund Thomas, Beetles Termite, Pest Control Co.

Sigmund Thomas, Beetles Termite, Pest Control Co. (and they know rodents, too).  Beetle’s does exclusion, because if you don’t, they will try to get in.  On the roof of the warehouse example, they installed a threshold to keep the rodents at bay.  There are three different types of rodents, Roof Rats, Norway Rats (rarer in L.A., bigger than roof rats and House Mouse which can squeeze into anything as small as your finger.  Even the smallest opening must be sealed.   Gophers are a problem if you have a lot of grass area and must be treated as well.
Have your house inspected yearly and Sigmund  will help you determine if you need localized treatment or whole-house tenting.  If you are a little neurotic, he will come out and inspect to see if there is either a single rodent, bees, or a termite infestation.

Cathe Caraway-Howard, Employment Law Attorney

Cathe Caraway-Howard, Employment Attorney, thanked Sigmund for the segue from rats to sharks. Cathe presented a case with her sexy assistant, Martin Horwitz. Cathe took the plaintiff’s side, a victim of sexual harassment who was unable to work for two years. The victim actually had to see a psychologist because of her issues. Martin represented Mr. Acme and denied the accusations, whole-heartedly. The defendant only had to disprove it by a preponderance of the evidence. Did the alleged conduct occur in a severe and pervasive manner? The Le Tip jurors found overwhelmingly in favor of the defendant.
When a company or an employee has an employment problem, contact Cathe. “Fighting for the little guy.”
