On the roof of the warehouse example, they installed a threshold to keep the rodents at bay. There are three different types of rodents, Roof Rats, Norway Rats (rarer in L.A., bigger than roof rats and House Mouse which can squeeze into anything as small as your finger. Even the smallest opening must be sealed. Gophers are a problem if you have a lot of grass area and must be treated as well.
Have your house inspected yearly and Sigmund will help you determine if you need localized treatment or whole-house tenting. If you are a little neurotic, he will come out and inspect to see if there is either a single rodent, bees, or a termite infestation.
